Why it is called Aloinopsis schooneesii?

Aloinopsis schooneesii derives its name from Diderikus Anthonie Schoonees (1907-2001), a South African teacher from Steytlerville. Schoonees, who was born in Steytlerville, attended the annual meeting of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science in Caledon in 1930 and later became a lecturer at Stellenbosch. He authored several papers on the morphology of anurans (frogs).

This information is sourced from the Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names and JSTOR, as well as David Hollombe.

The Appearance of Aloinopsis schooneesii

Aloinopsis schooneesii is a summer-dormant succulent that grows up to 3 cm in height and forms irregular rosettes of diamond-shaped dark green leaves with fleshy triangular green leaves and reddish-brown margins.

The plant also produces small yellow flowers that bloom in late winter or early spring. Additionally, it has tuberous roots.

Care for Aloinopsis schooneesii

Aloinopsis schooneesii is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal care. It thrives in bright, sunny locations and prefers to be kept on the dry side. It is important to avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.

Propagation of Aloinopsis schooneesii

Aloinopsis schooneesii can be propagated by stem or leaf cuttings.

To propagate by stem cuttings, select a healthy stem and cut it cleanly at an angle. Allow the cutting to callus over for a few days, and then plant it in well-draining soil.

To propagate by leaf cuttings, select a healthy leaf and remove it cleanly from the plant. Allow the leaf to callus over for a few days, and then place it in well-draining soil. Water sparingly until the cutting has rooted.
