History of Springs Preserve
The Kiwanis Water Conservation Park opened in 1982 on land donated by the Las Vegas Valley Water District, with a master plan developed in 1986. It was renovated and renamed the Desert Demonstration Gardens in 1990, featuring over 1,200 species of plants mostly from the southwestern deserts. The gardens closed in early 2007 to move to a new location, and were reopened on June 8, 2007 at the Springs Preserve.
Plant Varieties
The Mojave Collection at Springs Preserve includes a variety of plants that are native to the Mojave Desert, such as Joshua trees, yuccas, creosote bushes, and various species of cacti, including barrel cacti and hedgehog cacti. Additionally, the collection features various other desert-adapted plants, such as agaves and mesquites.

Our experience
In 2019, we visited Springs Preserve, the birthplace of Las Vegas, which includes the Las Vegas Botanical Gardens, wetland restoration, and walking trails with displays on local history, geology, botany, and zoology. We saw cacti, desert plants, historic buildings, a creek, a ground squirrel, and mistletoe in mesquite trees, all with a view of the Strip. A worthwhile stop.
